Irena Sendler was one of the most remarkable – and most unlikely – heroes of World War II, saving 2500 Jewish children during the German occupation of Poland. As a social worker, Irena had access to the Warsaw Ghetto, making it possible for her to rescue the daughter of a Jewish friend and safely hide the young girl with a Catholic family. Realizing that thousands of children were still in danger, Irena recruited sympathetic friends and co-workers to smuggle children out and place them in safe homes, farms and convents. At great personal risk, she devised extraordinary schemes to sneak the children by Nazi guards, bringing them out in ambulances, suitcases and even wheelbarrows. Irena was eventually captured by the Gestapo. Even after months of torture, she maintained her silence. Her heroic efforts were honored by a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

When You re Strange, written and directed by
the award-winning Tom DiCillo, is the first feature
documentary released on The Doors. Graced by the
narration of Johnny Depp, it carries the audience
through the journeys of vocalist Jim Morrison,
keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger,
and drummer John Densmore. This 90-minute
presentation features never-before-seen rare archival film,
pulled from their inception in 1966 to Morrison s passing in 1971.
These snapshot scenes of the band s history is as much an intimate
experience, as it is revealing.
After being featured at the Sundance, Berlin, Deauville, and San Sebastian Film Festivals, music fans who didn t catch this in
theaters can now relish in this extraordinary documentary. It celebrates the collaborative power of this illustrious rock quartet
and their revolutionary fusion of creativity and thought-provoking rebellion.Amazon.com
Of course that’s Johnny Depp narrating When You’re Strange, the 2010 documentary about the Doors: who else but Hollywood’s biggest fan of counterculture history? The film’s other prominent attraction is the treasure trove of heretofore unscreened footage from the band’s heyday, including backstage material, film-school stuff, and a curious project shot by (and starring) Jim Morrison after the group had broken through. That color footage, which When You’re Strange returns to throughout its running time, has a bearded, zonked Morrison driving through the Southwest desert, on the road to who knows where. For fans, this footage is fascinating to watch, although the actual narrative of the band’s rise and flameout will be very familiar if you already know the story. And even for newbies, the breathless, grandiloquent nature of writer-director Tom DiCillo’s approach will likely be a bit off-putting. Made with the participation of band members Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, and John Densmore, the movie adopts a general air of sadness about Morrison’s substance abuse, noting that a band intervention led to but one week of sobriety for their lead singer/shaman. It’s not all gloom: footage of Morrison wading through a pre-concert crowd catches some of the giddy promise of his unpredictability, which seems so in tune with the era. Those fresh glimpses of an icon make this film worth seeing, even if you’ve traveled down this road before. –Robert Horton

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB (DVD MOVIE)Amazon.com essential video
In 1996, composer, producer, and guitar legend Ry Cooder entered Egrem Studios in Havana with the forgotten greats of Cuban music, many of them in their 60s and 70s, some of them long since retired. The resulting album, Buena Vista Social Club, became a Grammy-winning international bestseller. When Cooder returned to Havana in 1998 to record a solo album by 72-year-old vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer, filmmaker Wim Wenders was on hand to document the occasion. Wenders splits the film between portraits of the performers, who tell their stories directly to the camera as they wander the streets and neighborhoods of Havana, and a celebration of the music heard in performance scenes in the studio, in their first concert in Amsterdam, and in their second and final concert at Carnegie Hall. The songs are too often cut short in this fashion, but Buena Vista Social Club is not a concert film. Wenders weaves the artist biographies with a glimpse of modern Cuba remembering its past, capturing a lost culture in music that is suddenly, unexpectedly revived for audiences in Havana and around the world. Wenders makes his presence practically invisible, as if his directorial flourishes or off-screen narration might deflect attention from the artists, who do a fine job of telling their own stories through interviews and music. It’s a loving portrait of a master class in Cuban music, with a vital cast of aging performers whose energy and passion belie their years. –Sean Axmaker

Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, and James McAvoy lead an impeccable cast in The Last Station, a sweet comedy-drama about the final days of the Russian novelist Tolstoy. Nineteenth-century paparazzi lurk outside of Tolstoy’s estate, hoping to snatch a picture of the rumored strife between the world-famous writer (Plummer, The Insider), who’s launched an antimaterialist movement, and his aristocratic wife, Sofya (Mirren, The Queen). Also lurking is Tolstoy’s aide, Chertkov (Paul Giamatti, Sideways), who despises Sofya and pushes to change Tolstoy’s will to prevent Sofya from inheriting the royalties from Tolstoy’s books. Into this nest of conflict comes a young secretary, Valentin (McAvoy, Atonement), who idolizes Tolstoy and strives to live by the principles of abstinence and vegetarianism… only to find his purity tested by sensual temptations (including a headstrong young woman played by Kerry Condon of Rome) and an unexpected sympathy for Sofya. Moments of sly comedy keep The Last Station from becoming overly literary. The movie as a whole lacks the emotional punch it reaches for, but every scene is a polished jewel, expertly and passionately crafted by the actors and writer-director Michael Hoffman (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), rich with feeling and social detail. Mirren, of course, is superb, with a wonderful portrayal of a woman who can’t help turning her genuine passions into a performance that repels her husband. –Bret Fetzer

- MARVEL X-MEN: VOLUME 4 (DVD MOVIE)
Product Description
The action reaches all new heights in Volume 4 of the landmark X-Men animated series. With adventures adapted directly from the original marvel comic books, this colletion is a rich piece of the X-Men legacy and a must have for every X-Man fan.
X-Men must join forces with the heroes of the future whan Apocalypse, a mighty mutant, is driven completely mad by his powers. Discuver the stunning conclusion to the 4-part epic Beyond Good and Evil in this sensational 14-episode set.Amazon.com
A pair of potent multi-episode stories–the tragic tale of supermutant Proteus, and Apocalypse’s world-shattering scheme to attain godhood–are the cornerstone of this double-disc set, which compiles most of the fourth season of the 1990s X-Men animated series. The Proteus two-fer, adapted from the 1979-80 story line in Uncanny X-Men, concerns a superbeing with powers of possession and reality alteration who escapes confinement at the Muir Island Research Centre (where he’d been placed by his mother, Moira McTaggart) to search for his father, who rejected him at birth. It’s a fairly moving story that hews closely to the print version (Proteus is less lethal here, and the meeting between father and son has a milder ending) and should please X-Men fans who value accurate depictions of the canon. The Apocalypse arc, which unspools over four episodes, is more complex: “Beyond Good and Evil” has the archvillain kidnapping psychics–including Jean Grey and Professor Xavier–to unleash a wave of mental energy that will destroy the world so that he can rebuild it in his image. The scope of the story is fairly impressive (it was originally intended as the conclusion of the series) and satisfies both the action and speculative-fiction elements that make the X-Men such an enduringly popular series. A second two-parter on disc 1, “Sanctuary” (based loosely on the “Fatal Attractions” arc from 1993), finds Magneto securing a permanent home for mutants on Asteroid M, but running afoul of Fabian Cortez and his Acolytes.
Volume 4’s second disc is a grab bag of assorted single-story episodes, some good (”The Lotus and the Steel,” which nicely encompasses Wolverine’s travels to Japan; “Family Ties,” in which Magneto is revealed to be the father of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch), others less so (”Have Yourself a Morlock Little X-Mas,” in which the subterranean Morlocks seek Wolverine, Jubilee, and Storm to aid an ailing Leech). Unfortunately, these are presented out of broadcast order (as is the case with the other Marvel/Disney X-Men discs), which may prove somewhat aggravating for those looking for a complete-season set. Also irksome is the continued lack of special features, though the image quality of the episodes is solid. –Paul Gaita

High-powered Wall Street bachelor Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) gets the shock of a lifetime when he wakes up one morning in suburban New Jersey next to Kate (Téa Leoni) the girlfriend he left 13 years ago. Suddenly Jack’s entire world is turned upside down. Can this once single-minded exec actually become The Family Man?System Requirements:Starring: Nicolas Cage Téa Leoni. Directed By: Brett Ratner. Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) is the quintessential Wall Street shark, scoring killer deals by day and shallow escort sex by night. His round-the-clock routine of empty luxuries is disturbed one lonely Christmas Eve when a gun-packing punk (Don Cheadle)–perhaps an angel of mercy–responds to an altruistic gesture from Jack by giving him “a glimpse” of the life he could have had. Could have, that is, if he had married the girlfriend (Téa Leoni) he’d abandoned 13 years earlier, raised two adorable children, worked in his father-in-law’s retail tire outlet, and lived happily ever after in suburban New Jersey. Thrust into this “glimpse” of the path not taken, Jack’s a single-malt man in a lite-brew world, wondering if he’ll ever return to his “better” life of callous wealth and solitude–or if he even wants to.
Carp all you want about this derivative premise, with its marginal stereotypes and biased embrace of domestic bliss and dirty diapers. The simple fact is, The Family Man works like a charm. Under the assured direction of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this holiday crowd-pleaser offers comedy and chemistry in equal measure, making the hilarity of Jack’s predicament a smooth catalyst for that rarest of movie romances: the marital love story. Leoni is Cage’s perfect match as Jack’s idealized but imperfect wife, and the movie’s appeal largely derives from its awareness that any life has its pleasures and pains. While it only flirts with the dark desperation that makes It’s a Wonderful Life a classic predecessor, The Family Man is an irresistible what-if fantasy, and even its debatable ending rides on a wave of genuine warmth and sentiment. –Jeff Shannon
