The Ring

Product Description
An inquisitive reporter views a mysterious videotape that is linked to several deaths she sets in motion a chain of events that puts her life in danger. Now she is in a race against time to solve the mystery before its too late. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 05/01/2007 Starring: Naomi Watts Brian Cox Run time: 115 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Gore VerbinskiAmazon.com
With its disturbing images and a few good shocks, The Ring is the kind of frightfest you’ll watch to set a chilling mood or spook your susceptible friends, but when you try to sort it out, this well-mounted American remake (of the 1998 Japanese hit Ringu, based on Koji Suzuki’s popular novel) becomes a batch of incoherent parts. The negligible plot follows a Seattle reporter (Naomi Watts) as she investigates the death of her niece, the victim of a mysterious videotape that, according to urban legend, causes the viewer’s death seven days later. (Fear Dot Com borrowed the same idea while avoiding this film’s lofty pretensions.) The countdown structure follows the reporter, her son, and her estranged boyfriend into deepening layers of terror–all quite effective until the movie attempts to explain itself. At that you’re better off shutting down your brain and letting the creepy visuals take over. –Jeff Shannon

Out of Africa

Description
The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen’s great epic romances. Directed by Oscar winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, its people and a mysterious white hunter (Redford). The masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.Amazon.com
Sydney Pollack’s 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen’s gradual discovery of her life and voice. One downside: while we may all love Redford, he is as convincingly British as Kevin Costner is in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. –Tom Keogh

The Day of the Jackal

Product Description
DAY OF THE JACKAL – DVD MovieAmazon.com essential video
With its high-intensity plot about an attempt to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle, the bestselling novel by Frederick Forsyth was a prime candidate for screen adaptation. Director Fred Zinnemann brought his veteran skills to bear on what has become a timeless classic of screen suspense. Not to be confused with the later remake The Jackal starring Bruce Willis (which shamelessly embraced all the bombast that Zinnemann so wisely avoided), this 1973 thriller opts for lethal elegance and low-key tenacity in the form of the Jackal, the suave assassin played with consummate British coolness by Edward Fox. He’s a killer of the highest order, a master of disguise and international elusiveness, and this riveting film follows his path to de Gaulle with an intense, straightforward documentary style. Perhaps one of the last great films from a bygone age of pure, down-to-basics suspense (and a kind of debonair European alternative to the American grittiness of The French Connection), The Day of the Jackal is a cat-and-mouse thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat until its brilliantly executed final scene (pardon the pun), by which time Fox has achieved cinematic immortality as one of the screen’s most memorable killers. –Jeff Shannon

Chucky – The Killer DVD Collection

Product Description
CHUCKY:KILLER DVD COLLECTION – DVD MovieAmazon.com
The most unlikely horror-movie icon this side of Leprechaun, the homicidal doll Chucky has blossomed into one of the most recognizable faces of fright fare over the last two decades, and this double-disc set chronicles four of his most monstrous misadventures. The original–and still quite creepy–Child’s Play feature (from 1988) is not included in the set (that title is owned by MGM, and this set is a Universal release), so the Killer DVD Collection kicks off with the more formulaic Child’s Play 2 (1990) and 3 (’91, directed by Lost producer/director Jack Bender), both of which are saved only by veteran character actor Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. The series received a much-needed shot in the arm in 1998 with Bride of Chucky, an over-the-top revamp that dispensed with the tired horror-movie mechanics and dove headfirst into a gleeful mix of camp and gore; much of the credit for that film’s success must go to Hong Kong director Ronny Yu (Bride with White Hair), who imparts much visual flair to the proceedings and Jennifer Tilly as an amoral moll whose attempt to free the killer that possesses Chucky results in another monster doll on the loose. The fifth (and to date, final) Child’s Play/Chucky feature, Seed of Chucky, rounds out the set; it strives for the humor-horror quotient of Yu’s film, and yields mixed results.

No extras are featured on the first two sequels, but both Bride and Seed offer up commentaries and featurettes for the devoted Chucky fans. Bride gets two commentaries–one with Yu, and the other with Dourif, Tilly, and scriptwriter Don Mancini, while Seed’s commentary has Mancini (who was promoted to director) and Tilly. Making-of featurettes for both features are also included, as well as a clip of Tilly on The Tonight Show. None of these supplements will be new to the longtime Child’s Play collector–all have been released on previous single and multi-disc sets–and buyers should know that they will find the R-rated versions of Bride and Seed here, and not the unrated versions (which have also been previously released). So it’s fans looking to fill in the Chucky gap in their DVD libraries that will benefit the most from the Killer DVD Collection. –Paul Gaita

Men at Work

Description
It’s up to a pair of trash-hauling heroes to clean up the city in this action-comedy starring real-life brothers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez. Garbage men James (Estevez) and Carl (Sheen) dream of opening a surf shop, but often land in hot water due to their practical jokes. When they discover the body of a murdered politician on their route, they attempt to sniff out the killer themselves a bad idea that rapidly ensnares them in a toxic waste scandal. Soon, they’re thrown headlong into a manic escapade involving a deranged veteran, an attractive campaign manager, a kidnapped pizza deliveryman and a greedy polluter who wants them hauledoff to a landfill for good!Amazon.com
Proving that a little success can be a dangerous thing, Emilio Estevez parlayed his early-’80s “brat-pack” fame into a dubious directorial career, beginning with 1986’s Wisdom (in which Estevez costarred with then-fiancée Demi Moore), and resuming with this sophomore-effort 1990 comedy that benefits most from Emilio’s teaming with brother Charlie Sheen. (Close your eyes and listen: their voices sound like their dad Martin Sheen after inhaling helium.) The brothers play a pair of garbage collectors who discover a body on their daily rounds, and the corpse draws them into a scheme involving corrupt politics, illegal hazardous-waste dumping, and a lovely neighbor (Leslie Hope) with connections to the dead guy. Add a wacko Vietnam vet (Keith David), an unsuspecting pizza deliverer (Dean Cameron), and a pair of overzealous cops, and you’ve got a comedy that lazily rambles from one lightweight scene to another. It’s way too loose to have any noteworthy quality, but that’s also part of the movie’s low-brow appeal: Estevez and Sheen play well together, and this is just their way of goofing off with Hollywood money. With a sharper script and an experienced director, Men at Work could have paid off handsomely. As it is, these sibling antics are amiable enough, and the early-’90s fashion crimes (like Charlie’s “dork knob” ponytail) offer an amusing diversion from the lamest gags. –Jeff Shannon

Zoolander

Product Description
As Derek Zoolander searches for meaning in his life at the end of his fashion modeling career, he is brainwashed by the evil fashion guru Mugatu to kiAmazon.com
Charge your micro-mini cell phones and whip up some orange mocha Frappuccino, ‘cuz Zoolander is on the runway, and you’re gonna laugh your booty off! Based on a sketch created by writer-director Ben Stiller and cowriter Drake Sather for the 1996 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, Zoolander is a delirious send-up of New York’s fashion scene as epitomized by male model Derek Zoolander (Stiller), a dimwitted preener who’s oblivious to a Manchurian Candidate-like plot to turn him into a brainwashed assassin. Tipped off by a reporter (Christina Taylor), Zoolander teams with rival model Hansel (Owen Wilson) to foil the poodle-haired fashion designer (Will Ferrell) who’s behind the nefarious scheme. The goofy plot’s only half the fun; with roles for Stiller’s parents (Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara), dozens of celebrity cameos, endlessly quotable dialogue, and improvisational energy to spare, Zoolander is very smart about being very stupid, easily matching the Austin Powers franchise for inspired comedic lunacy. –Jeff Shannon

Elvis 75th Anniversary DVD Collection

Product Description
JAILHOUSE ROCK * IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD’S FAIR * KISSIN’ COUSINS * VIVA LAS VEGAS * GIRL HAPPY * TICKLE ME * HARUM SCARUM * SPINOUT * DOUBLE TROUBLE * STAY AWAY, JOE * SPEEDWAY * LIVE A LITTLE,LOVE A LITTLE * CHARRO! * THE TROUBLE WITH GIRLS * ELVIS: THAT’S THE WAY IT IS SPECIAL EDITION * First Time on DVD – ELVIS ON TOUR * THIS IS ELVISAmazon.com
The novelty backdrop of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair lends wonderful space-age scenery to this Elvis vehicle. The King co-stars with a pre-2001 Gary Lockwood as freelance pilots stranded in Seattle, where Elvis spends more time babysitting a little kid than panting after ostensible love interest Joan O’Brien. There’s more plot than usual for a Presley picture, which in this case is not a good thing, and the songs are pallid, save “One Broken Heart for Sale.” The real kick is the futuristic look of the World’s Fair, as personified by Seattle’s Space Needle and Monorail (both of which serve as backdrops for EP songs). Just three years out of the Army, Elvis’s persona is thoroughly square and tame, ruffled only by the occasional comic double-take. And yes indeed, that is little Kurt Russell, future star of Elvis, kicking the King in the shins in a couple of scenes. –Robert Horton

Doc Hollywood

Description
A brash young medical resident is driving across the country to begin a career in Beverly Hills as a cosmetic surgeon to the stars. But an accident of fate strands him in a small southern town. There, his outlook on life – and love – gets a down-home twist that changes him forever.Amazon.com
At first glance, this 1991 comedy looks like another formulaic fluff-piece with a standard fish-out-of-water scenario–in this case a hotshot young doctor (Michael J. Fox) whose cross-country drive to become a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon is interrupted when he crashes in the rural hamlet of Grady, South Carolina. But as Fox’s character is urged by the folksy locals to stay–an offer made tempting by his romance with a law student (Julie Warner)–this unassuming little movie just gets better and better thanks to a sharp script and a splendid supporting cast. Well, okay … maybe Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda aren’t used to the fullest of their abilities, but for the most part this is a charming and surprisingly intelligent comedy that’s good enough to compare favorably to My Cousin Vinny, a film with which it shares much in common. Fox has all the right moves to make his character both bullish and ultimately agreeable, and Julie Warner’s performance may leave you wondering why this fine actress didn’t immediately rise to stardom. –Jeff Shannon
